Maha Shivratri, celebrated in honor of Lord Shiva, involves a series of sacred rituals that devotees observe with great devotion. Here are the key rituals on the Ambrisheshwar Mahadev temple

Timings

Fasting: Devotees observe a strict fast throughout the day and night, consuming only water and fruits. The fast symbolizes control over desires and purification of the soul.

Ritual Bath: The day begins with a ritual bath, preferably in holy water sources like the Ganges. Devotees then visit the Shiva temple wearing clean or new clothes, and they often apply sacred ash (vibhuti) to their foreheads

Abhishekam: One of the central rituals involves bathing the Shivalinga every three hours with various substances such as water, milk, honey, and ghee. This ritual is accompanied by the chanting of mantras like “Om Namah Shivaya” and the application of vermilion paste on the linga

Offerings: Devotees offer Bilva leaves, fruits, incense, and lamps to the Shivalinga. Each item has symbolic significance, such as purification, virtue, and the attainment of knowledge

Night Vigil (Jaagaran): Devotees stay awake all night, often in the temple, participating in continuous prayers, chanting, and singing hymns in praise of Lord Shiva. This nightlong vigil is believed to grant spiritual merit and absolution of sins

Puja and Meditation: The worship includes four rounds of puja (prayers) throughout the night, corresponding to the four prahars (quarters of the night). Each session involves different offerings and rituals

Conclusion: The fast is broken the next morning after offering food and other items to Lord Shiva. Devotees also engage in charitable acts, such as feeding Brahmins and giving alms to sadhus.
